And now… Mr. Smith Goes To Stupidtown. Whatever Will Smith thought of Chris Rock’s off-the-cuff joke, there were a variety of ways to handle it aside from what he did. He could have just shouted from his seat, “That wasn’t funny… my wife has Alopecia… lay off!”, which would still have been wildly inappropriate for a live broadcast, especially one where you were expecting to win, essentially, a lifetime achievement award for one film you were in.
I feel sorry for Will Smith. Not a fan, just feel sorry for a guy who fucked up so badly..... so publically, in front of his children. Insane to think of bearing that much humiliation.... like contemplating a Grand Canyon, a Niagra Falls of humiliation....
I’m reminded of that great scene in Manhattan where Woody is talking to some friends at a party about Nazis marching on New York. One guy says “There is a devastating satirical piece in the New York Times about that.” And Woody responds with “A satirical piece is one thing but bricks and baseball bats really gets to the point”.
