This will be brief… for me.

Congratulations to Disney and Pixar and Toy Story 5 for doing what was expected… a launch that sends it right in the trajectory of $1 billion+.

But once again, because no one seems to want to hear it…

Weekend 25, 2026

7 of the Top 18 are from MPA Major studios. 8, if you include Amazon MGM. 10, if you include Lionsgate.

The problem starts with the wonderful successes of Obsession and Backrooms. Together, they grossed an estimated $21.5 million this weekend, which is terrific and also not in the way of any other movies doing more business.

Understand that I am saying that their success is great and glorious in every way… but that in the overall scheme of the box office, they should be candles and calligraphy on top of the cake and not the cake itself. This is not to say they are less important than Major Studio Releases. They are almost 9% of the year’s total domestic gross and without them we would still be under $4 billion for the year-to-date.

BUT… this is not an excuse for the Majors not releasing more movies… even with the successes of April and May.

I picked the number 18 to stop counting Major releases because that is all that is on the board (aside from a 95 venue dump this weekend). In the always discussed 2019 box office, the same Weekend 25 had 10 Major releases in the Top 18 and 5 more if you included Lionsgate, Amazon, and United Artists. Plus, the were another 7 from the Majors charting (as low as #36).

The math makes it obvious… putting the Toy Story movies that led this weekend in both years, in 2019, there were 8 other Major Studio releases in the Top18, generating $33.9 million over the weekend. This year, there are 6 Major Studio releases in that Top 18, generation just $20.3 million. Add on another $868,000 on the 2019 bottom line for the Majors’ releases that weekend… with $0 (well, $15,000) after position number 18 on the chart.

Thanks to Obsession and Backrooms, from Focus and A24, this weekend appears to be $24 million better than Weekend 25 in 2019. But in a fully stocked box office universe, this weekend - accounting for these added success stories - should be $13 million better than 2019, then another $40 million on the increase in Toy Story business. $53 million better instead of $24 million better. That is a proper comeback.
