THB #669: 4 Weeks To Oscar - Distraction

Next Tuesday, the 11th, the voting for the winners begins. It lasts a whole week… which in this season, could change everything yet again.

Emilia Pérez, as we knew it, died in a hail of gunfire over the last 10 days. Netflix has officially flipped to a Best International and Zoe Saldaña campaign, as Karla Sofía Gascón, amazingly, reflected her on-screen character and couldn’t stick to the image that was so carefully created.

“Oscars? I don’t need no stinkin’ Oscars!”

I am not going to defend or even discuss the tweets in any depth. I will just say that as the internet wildlings were making a mountain out of what should have been a molehill, Karla stole a tractor and piled more dirt on top of the pile, uncontrolably, until she has buried herself and for the most part, the movie, beyond recovery.

I quite like the film, regardless of the controversies, and embrace Jacques Audiard in much the same way I do when I watch The Sisters Brothers, set in the American west of the past, or A Prophet…
