This last weekend, my wife and I went to go see a screening of Deadpool & Wolverine at Fox. She didn’t see the movie this summer because she had not seen the first 2 films. So she watched them on Disney+ and she was ready for the latest.
I had seen the film a couple times or three in theaters, but it’s been a few months, so I was happy to revisit.
What I found was as fine a piece of filmmaking as I have seen this year. The major action sequences were expertly conceived, designed, directed, performed, and edited. The ideas of the film, from the idea of erasure of our histories to overcoming regretted choices that we have made in our lives, are right out of an arthouse movie. The film is loaded to the brim with surprise and delight. And it manages to twist the knife into its genre throughout while never slipping into self-parody/self-loathing.
I have been known to say of movies, “If it was in black & white or in a foreign language, that film being trashed would be hailed as a masterpiece…
