This Oscar season was Netflix’s 6th turn at bat with at least one Best Picture nominee. And it was the 6th time they didn’t win Best Picture.
There is a conversation to be had about what this means and what Netflix’s best foot forward might be.
But as often happens in the days after Oscar, there are some hysterical responses. Jason Bailey is one of those movie writers who has been around for a while… is smart enough… but comes in way too hot way too often. And Bloomberg decided to print his hysterical spin on Netflix’s situation today. The sub-hed is “No matter how much money the streaming giant spends on big names and productions, it can’t buy Hollywood’s respect.“
I have long had issues with Netflix’s approach, starting with the lack of full theatrical releases with reported grosses. But at the same time, The Academy has shown not only respect, but deference, unwilling to adjust the playing field with new rules to keep everyone playing the same game.
