Welcome to the least surprising Oscar nomination morning in memory.
The one category in which I was really surprised was Best Director, where Jonathan Glazer pushing out Alexander Payne was not such a surprise… but Justine Triet pushing out Greta Gerwig actually shocked me. (Of course, positioning it like that is just conjecture… Dear God, don’t let me sound like one of those idiots who thinks they know “what really happened.”)
Minor suprises for me were Sterling K. Brown getting in and Willem Dafoe not and the Nyad duo getting in while Margot Robbie and Julianne Moore were left hanging. But divas gonna diva and none of these were really outside the margins of the reaosnably expected.
The 3000-ish members voting from outside of the United States continue to flex their muscles with the nominations, albeit within the lines. Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest got 5 nominations each, respectively, including Best Picture, Directing, and Screenplay for each. As a Best Pic…
