THB #467: Is Academy Inclusion Good For The Jews?

I wrote about The Academy’s inclusion efforts yesterday, based on the surprising 17% of the overall group of titles qualified for Oscar nominations being - by choice or rule - disqualified from the Best Picture race.

Before I get to today’s new addition to this situation, allow me to mention that I realize this morning that I hadn’t even addressed the inherent illogic that qualifying under the inclusion rule only addresses Best Picture. If there is a real belief that jumping through these hoops - held so very low - is the right thing to require, why limit it to the one category (Best Picture) in which 90% of the titles qualifying to be considered for any kind of Oscar have no chance of competing, much less being nominated?

But that is just another reason why the inclusion rule, however well-intended, acts as nothing but an self-image salve by The Academy, which is an organization that engages movies that have been released (now, made for tv or theatrical) by reflecting on them, not b…
