I have been rooting for the new Jennifer Lawrence comedy, No Hard Feelings, since the first teaser landed. Studios have under-delivered on comedy in theaters for a few years now and it needs to return. We have 4 this summer. The Blackening got off to a soft start and is pretty much exactly what the advertising offers… so I don’t expect a surge, even though I like the over-the-top comedy. Also, Jennifer Lawrence has been a legit movie star and is heading into her next era and we could use her at full strength.
Add to that, I am a fan of Gene Stupnitsky’s first feature, Good Boys, which opened at $21 million in mid-August and did 4x opening, which is quite good… not quite as strong a hold as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, which also opened to $21 million on a similar mid-August date and held for $109 million domestic… but quite good.
And the more I type my good feelings, the more I realize anyone reading this is waiting for the “but.”
