As you know, if you have been reading me regularly, my feelings about the state of box office analysis - led by the trades - are not ecstatic. The one I most prefer, Anthony at Deadline, spend paragraphs today rationalizing the weak launch of Guardians 3 today. Leading with either excuses or misused analytics like CinemaScore or seat counts or whatever fresh hell some company is selling this year is not encouraging to me. And I really like Anthony and he is just doing his job and all. Okay.
Today, I’m going to walk you through the year-to-date based on the statistics that answer some questions for me and create others I simply can’t answer at this time.
2022 New Releases (as of May 7) on Over 1000 screens: 32
2023 New Releases on Over 1000 screens: 45
So this has improved significantly so far.
Even better, last year just 19 (59%) of these films came from major studios (inc Dependents and Lionsgate) and this year, that number is up to 29 (64%).
