THB #537: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Furiosa is a Max Max Saga.
But it is different than any of the other Mad Max movies from the mad genius, Dr. George Miller. Surprisingly, it feels influenced by Miller’s 2022 movie, Three Thousand Years of Longing, as for the first time in his Max cycle of films, there is a personal intimacy with 2 of the characters - Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) and the always-chattering Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) - and focus on backstory.
The story of Max, before he went mad, is told in flashbacks… quick, sharp bites of the past. The story of Furiosa, who we met in Mad Max: Fury Road as the adult Charlize Theron, is told in this film in a linear way. Completely coincidentally, the opening of the film is similar to the opening of the Apes film that opened last weekend… kids, off doing what they are not really supposed to be doing, reaching for one more thing that is just out of reach. They are interrupted by outsiders who threaten the peaceful place where they live.
And so begins the highly intense race …
