I didn’t wake up this morning looking to pick a fight with Mark Harris. I’m still not looking for one. I quite like the guy. But he wrote an 8-tweet mini-festo this morning… which was pushed into my TweetView before I even got to find it by strolling through Twitter itself. As I thought about it, it occurred to me that it was a solid reflection of the opposing viewpoints that Mark and I have now had for a long time.
Like much of the industry, Mark tends to argue that crisis comes to the industry like the weather… uncontrolled… and in need of some kind of major intervention and/or transition.
My sense of the industry is that it is a series of events that are caused by choices that are made by one or two powerful people/studios to start, then followed by most of the others, until one or two powerful people/studios figure out how to move in a new direction that works better.
