THB #344: Oscars... Again.
This is the problem with Matt Belloni… people react to his Daily Grill gossip rag like its news because we can’t tell the difference anymore… especially in this business. So now, when I should be wondering about what Trump’s pile o’ indictments will look like, I am in a discussion about the absurd non-starter probably completely fake proposal that Magic Matt floated in his missive today… some crazy notion that would require a 15-city distribution to qualify for Oscar.
The truth is that Netflix already qualifies on this basis and I would not be shocked at all to find out that they floated the idea. It excludes others and does absolutely nothing to change their theatrical/non-theatrical Oscar trajectory while the change seems dramatic.
Is anyone smarter than Netflix about coming up with “radical” ideas that don’t change anything that they want to do? Because this idea is so clearly reverse engineered with not-helpful intentions that I can’t even imagine who else would come up with it. Ma…
