Watching John Wick: Chapter 4 is the equivalent of watching someone else play a first-shooter video game.
Now… my 13-year-old watches people play videogames on YouTube. So I know there is an audience of young people for this.
But what shocked me, before and much more so after seeing the film, was the high praise from film critics. And I don’t mean the crazy quoted stuff in the ads from geek boys. I mean it’s got a 96 on Rotten Tomatoes after 210 reviews. 96% approval.
Reading some of the reviews, it seems that some very smart critics have convinced themselves that John Wick is a Buster Keaton movie, enhanced by its minimalism and the emotionless face at the center.
For me, it was very reminiscent of The Gray Man (46% on RT) or in many ways, the Marvel movies that stick in the craw of so many of these same critics.
