I was looking forward to Creed III for months, ever since the first trailer landed. I think Michael B. Jordan is a very talented and very earnest artist. Tessa Thompson and Jonathan Majors should be on the top level of movie stars for the next few decades.

But there is a giant problem with the movie.

Adonis Creed is wrong.

Undeniably wrong.

He is not the hero of this story.

And the movie really, really doesn’t want him to be wrong. Or not be the hero.

So the screenplay cheats. And if I had to guess - which is all I can do - I would guess that there were a lot of late changes and added sequences meant to “fix” the story.

The acting is first class. The movie is beautifully shot by Kramer Morgenthau. As a first time director with a studio-level budget, Michael B. Jordan does a good job. He has some of the first time director flaws and he didn’t let editors Jessica Baclesse and Tyler Nelson cut his overly ambitious missteps or his overlong montages.
