There really is no news out there right now… I mourn Olivia Newton -John and Lamont Dozier and whomever else of note we have lost. But deep breaths…
So… as I was driving around in the 95 degree+ heat of Los Angeles yesterday, I thought about the upcoming Emmys and how the way things are right now, you could easily do another entire award show with just the incredibly worthy shows and performances that were left out.
It would be very enterprising of me to try to build a group of, say, 100 people whose opinions I respect about television and to ask them to nominate and then vote on all these categories. But it’s August 9th… it’s hot… and I’m launching this lazy… which means YOU get to vote. Anonymously! Freely! Everyone! There is no paywall for this.
Maybe next year, I will have an award made and ship them to the winners.
I hope that you will all participate… voting lasts a full week… so feel free to send it to your friends and obsessive compulsive snub complainers. The more the more unsnubbed!
The poll function on Substack limits polls to 5 options, which means just 5 nominees in each of the 15 categories… which means more snubs!!! I can only apologize.
Have fun!
In the category of Outstanding Drama Series, being left out AGAIN are Conversations With Friends, Pachinko and This Is Us. Apologies
In Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, I gathered 6 overlooked nominees. Not making the poll is Ansel Elgort. Apologies!
For outstanding lead actress in a drama series, Katheryn Winnick gets left behind for her underrated work on the underrated Big Sky. Apologies!
I found outstanding supporting actor in a drama series to be a tough drill down. Lots of great supporting actors out there… but I limited it to this group of 5 standouts (in my view)
For outstanding supporting actress in a drama series, it was similar to the guys. For instance, I love Elizabeth Shue’s turn in Super Pumped. She delivers the origin story of a madman without all the words. That said, she didn’t make the 5, not did the very worthy Maya Hawke, who kinda steals Stranger Things every time she shows up.
And Now, On To The Comedy!!!
The most overloaded category of them all. I have 14 shows that I think could easily join the already remarkable EIGHT actual Emmy nominees. Tastes, obviously, vary.
Here is the list:
Atlanta
Awkwafina is Nora from Queens
Better Things
black-ish
Fairfax
Ghosts
The Great
I Love That For You
Julia
Minx
Peacemaker
Reservation Dogs
Single Drunk Female
Somebody Somewhere
And I have to pick 5… woe is me…
I don’t want a run-off for one category, but here is a chance to express your feelings for 5 more…
To the rest… love and apologies…
Onto outstanding lead actor in a comedy series… not as overloaded, as so many of these shows have female leads.
Outstanding lead actress in a comedy series, on the otherhand is another way overloaded category. I have 9 “Snubbies” to go with the 6 Emmy nominees this year.
I hate doing this, but the magical team of Anna Konkle and Maya Erskine go for being such a great comedy duo, Awkwafina is great but has enough love to last, and Vanessa Bayer is just… she is so good in her show… but… my apologies.
I expected outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series to be more loaded, even beyond the 8 Emmy nominees. Not so much. But these performances (including one that may be seen as a Guest role) are every bit the equal of those nominated…
Another pile up around outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series. I have 9 on top of the 8 Emmy nominees.
This may be the hardest one for me. Molly Shannon is perfect and undervalued and out for now. Bebe Neuworth will be warmed by her 2 Emmys, though she is a champ on Julia. Lily Mae Harrington is a rising comedy star, but she has time. And I love Stephanie Hsu on Mrs. Maisel, but she is supporting a supporting character, so with much regret… apologies, ladies! You don’t deserve the double snub.
And now, Limited Series!
In terms of outstanding limited series, I have 10 on top of the 5 Emmy nominees.
Apologies to Joe vs. Carole, Loki, The Shrink Next Door, Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber, and WeCrashed.
The great re-snubbed actors of outstanding lead actor in a limited series or TV movie are, sadly, Miles Teller and Will Ferrell. Apologies!
I pulled 6 outstanding lead actresses in a limited series or TV movies on top of the 6 Emmy nominees. Olivia Colman has an Emmy and and Oscar… so… apologies…
In the category of outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or TV movie, the 2 stand outs that will have to remain standing out are O-T Fagbenle, who was great in WeCrashed and Paul Rudd for his turn playing the comic to Will Ferrell’s straight man in The Shrink Next Door.
In the final category, outstanding supporting actress in a limited series or TV movie, a performance that I thought really stood out amongst the testosterone-driven show, Kerry Bishe. Apologies, Kerry… and again, to all those who are being re-snubbed here or feel snubbed overall.
Ironically, I hate the word “snub” when it comes to awards. It suggests intention, which is not reasonable. But it is the word people use. I thank you for having fun with it and not taking it all too seriously.
There is a podcast out there called “Snubbies” and I bow to their coining of the word. I hate when people steal my ideas or oft-used phrases. But they don’t really do what I am playing with here and they have not done a podcast in over a year, so I am not feeling too guilty. (If you see this, guys, feel free to write me and I will be happy to promote you by name with added context.)
Until tomorrow…
“We Own This City” , not “Town”….
Corrected... but it erased the vote that was there because I made an edit... argh!!!
