This is one of the greatest, if not the greatest line-up for films competing for Oscars in history.
So why, 13 days from Oscar, doesn’t it feel that way?
Spending the weekend paying close attention to the SAG Awards, the Independent Spirit Awards, and the Producers Guild Awards only made the season fatigue worse. It wasn’t that any of the shows were bad. They weren’t, even if the inability to make a great moment out of the Ceasefire protest at the ISAs reminded me of Will Smith at The Oscars.
What we have here is a broken system.
What is the point of six-and-a-half month Oscar season?
A lot of us make a living off of it… but when did the Oscar season become the WPA for the movie (and television!!!) business?
Like so many things, in show business and elsewhere, mature businesses - which Oscar is - find it almost impossible to make real change unless the market absolutely forces them to do so.
